If everyone is healthy when the season begins in September, the Redskins interior line will feature a starting lineup comprised of the same embattled group that started 2011. That would be seven year veteran Will Montgomery at center, along with a guard tandem of Kory Lichtensteiger on the left and Chris Chester on the right. Both Chester and Montgomery played all 16 games last season.
With last season safely under their belts, and another year in the system, this group certainly has the potential to be humming along like a well-oiled diesel on opening day.
The need for offensive line depth has long been recognized however, so the Redskins spent their 3rd round, 71st overall draft pick this year on SMU guard prospect Josh LeRebius. This pick will no doubt overjoy the Redskins-never-pay-enough-attention-to-the-offensive-line crowd. God, I hope it does. They never, never, shut up about the gosh-darn line. I swear, some people would have the front office compose the team entirely of right tackles. But I digress.
According to respected journalist John Keim, “ Leribeus adds depth inside, something the Redskins desperately need. He started two seasons at left guard, but also played right guard and worked out at center for teams before the draft. Leribeus played in a man-blocking scheme at SMU, but will play in a zone scheme with Washington. However, he said he felt more comfortable in the zone scheme he played in during the East-West Shrine Game. He’s not considered a great athlete, but has good footwork.”
