The NFL unveiled its 2012 pre-season schedule yesterday, and for the Washington Redskins and their fans, there is one game among those four early season contests that stands above the others, if for no other reason than its ability to generate a buzz. That game is Washington vs. Indianapolis in pre-season week three.
We know the matchup will occur during the third pre-season week, just not which day yet. The NFL, like a God who looks just like Roger Goddell, will let us know in its own sweet time. One widely held view is that the third pre-season game is the most important of the season, as it is the game most likely to feature starting players along with the installed schemes on both sides of the ball. Coaches often elect to run pared down versions of both their offense and their defense during the pre-season, however during the third week, the common prescription among teams is that starters will remain in the lineup for at least the first half, performing some semblance of what they plan to do during the real season.
This game will provide Redskins fans with a home-cooked look at the first marquee matchup between Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck. Will this become the matchup in the NFL in years to come? Are they to be the new titans of the football kingdom? More will be revealed. The game will be played at Fed Ex field, which can be a steaming, howling bowl of spilled beer and spent emotion in August. I wanna be there, so bad.
